Dual Sport Maps is a navigation app for dual sport motorcycling enthusiasts. It is designed to be used when you are out in the wild parts of the world, out of the reach of a cell phone network. The app give you access to basemaps for nearly the entire world courtesy of OpenStreetMaps.org. These will be rendered directly on the phone so you don't need cell coverage. The rendering engine is courtesy of http://osmand.net/ . The app also gives you access to thousands of tracks uploaded by the users of http://www.dualsportmaps.com. These tracks are integrated into the navigation map and give a GPS unit experience. Tracks, waypoints, photos, POI databases are all available. Maps are rendered from above or with a look ahead perspective. Your current track is recorded for later user. You can also download map tiles of many popular maps for later offline use with a simple click or two. Lastly, you can upload custom raster maps (jpgs) to the website and then download those maps to the app as overlays on top of the basemap. Check out the white screenshot (a MVUM).
The app has rudimentary turn by turn routing, even when offline. This is not the apps core competency though. This app is for storing and references tracks and waypoints while out in the middle of nowhere. If you need turn by turn instructions, there are better options available.
A remote control will soon be available to mount to your handlebars so the phone can be made weather resistant.
You should NEVER travel without a backup navigation system, be it maps, or a second GPS or perhaps this software if you are already in love with what you are using. Also, please ride responsibly and do not try to operate your mobile device while moving.
